🌟 Yesterday we launched the first #AbertHirschman lecture at UNESCO! 🤝 Albert Hirschman was a pioneering thinker in #globaldevelopment, known for his #courage, progressive convictions, “bias for hope” and impact on major world events. His concept of #unbalancedgrowth revealed economic inequalities, advocating for #governmentaction; thus, these lectures named after himaim to inspire meaningful change in shaping our world.🌎 ✨ Thank you Daron Acemoglu for leading today’s inspiring first edition! "Can Technological Progress Build Shared Prosperity?", challenged the assumption that #technology always leads to #progress. He stressed the importance of #inclusive institutions in creating #equalopportunities for long-term success, while showing how #extractiveinstitutions—concentrating power and wealth—undermine the well-being of all, from governments to individuals. “The key for shared prosperity is the direction of innovation. It is impossible to build shared prosperity if all tools push for automation and centralisation of information in the hands of companies... Machines should be at the service of humans, expand human capabilities and human agencies. AI, if done right, could go in that direction.” - Daron Acemoglu, Author and Massachusetts Institute of Technology Professor. 🌐 Digital technologies and #AI significantly impact jobs and #democracy, offering potential benefits but also risking greater inequality if left in the hands of a few. Acemoglu's lecture highlighted the need for oversight to prevent these advancements from worsening economic divides and threatening democracy. Addressing these challenges is crucial to ensuring technology serves society as a whole. 💡⚖ “Too often, we fall into the trap of linear thinking, relying solely on metrics like #GDP, which fail to capture the true complexities of our world, consider the impact on the #environment or take into account the interests of future generations. Now, we look ahead to the next #MinisterialSummit in the #DominicanRepublic in 2025! 👏The Council serves as a dedicated platform for discussions on #AIGovernance in #LAC, ensuring ethical management while advancing essential elements such as infrastructure and competencies. This focus will guide our collective efforts in addressing various dimensions of AI ethics in the region.Thank you to all participating countries and especially to Uruguay’s Hebert Paguas for exemplary leadership. So proud of this Taskforce on Inequality and Social-related Financial Disclosures (TISFD) that will ensure consideration of the current state of #inequalities around the world as a major risk for companies. We need to incorporate in the #financial reporting! Glad to be a co-chair with a fantastic group!
